20 Minutes of Action
Spoken Word | Dance | Storytelling | Theater | Music | Political Action
A one-hour show presented by JUST ART: Stanford Artist/Activist Collective
The public discourse about Brock Turner's "20 minutes of action," Donald Trump's "locker room talk,"and the (mis)appropriation of the term "rape culture" has been troubling. The news media often glosses over race and class, and ignores issues most pertinent to disabled, queer and trans* folks. Sexual violence and rape culture are interwoven with the mass incarceration of men of color, the fetishization and objectification of women of color, the erasure of queer intimate partner violence, and racialized ideas of what a “good” (or believable) victim looks like and acts like. This performance traces those connections and challenges mainstream responses sexual violence that perpetuate cycles of oppression. We aim to center the voices most often marginalized in conversations about sexual violence.
